The GATE examination
was conducted jointly Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institutes
of Technology. The examination of Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is
conducted on the behalf National Coordination Board – GATE. Other organizations
involved are Department of Higher Education, and MHRD ministry of Government of
India. All the major IITS like Bombay, Madras, Roorkee, Delhi, Guwahati,
Kanpur, and Kharagpur are involved in conducting the gate examination. After
the examination, the candidates are provided with GATE score based on their
GATE examinations.
Master of Engineering
and Master of Technology are some of the areas where the students can get
admission after securing good gate score. Some prestigious colleges also accept
Gate score for getting admission into Doctor of Philosophy. Apart from getting
admission, the candidates are also provided with suitable financial assistance
from the ministry of human resource and development. Many organization recruits
candidates for entry level jobs based on their performance in GAT Eexaminations. The selection of candidates into the master program can be done
directly based on the GATE score or through admission tests, in accordance to
the admission parameters set by different organizations. In cases of selection
of candidates through admission tests, the weightage of gate score is 70% and
admission tests is 30%.
It is reported that an
amount of 25000 rupees per month is awarded to students under the JRF-GATE
scheme. The amount is increased to 28000 rupees per month after completion of
two years of their JRF-GATE. The students are usually upgraded to SRF (Senior
Research Fellowship) – GATE. After compilation of 5 years, the students are
provided with Ph. D degree.
Some of the popular
subjects for appearing in gate examinations are Biotechnology, Mining Engineering,
Civil Engineering, and Metallurgical Engineering. In addition to this, the
subjects of Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, and Computer Science &
Information Technology, are also popular among candidates appearing in GATE
examinations. Since, most of students appearing in engineering are placed in
information technology firms. Hence the graduates appearing for the computer
science has increased in recent past in cities like Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi
and Mumbai. As per a recent survey conducted, it was reported that about 107,086
students appeared for computer science and information technology in the year
2010. The number of students has increased in the years 2015 where about 115,425
appeared for the computer science and information technology.
Indian Oil Corporation
Ltd., Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation,
are few public sector companies that recruit computer science graduate with
valid GATE score. Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd. and Bharat Broadband
Network Limited, are other public & private sectors companies in India that
recruits computer science graduates with gate score.
