Exam Pattern of the UGC NET

UGC NET exam is conducted twice a year to select candidates for teaching profession and also chose candidates for junior research fellowship.   A candidate has to be post graduate in the subject for taking part in the UGC NET exam. General candidate has to secure at least 55 % marks. Candidates belonging to backward classes, ST and SC groups only need 50 % marks.

Exam is conducted in three papers. Paper 1 is common to all candidates. This paper consists of 60 questions out of which candidates have to attempt only 50 questions. The question are objective type and are covered from history, geography, current affairs, political science, English, teaching aptitude etc. The total marks of this question papers is 100.  The questions are very easy and candidate has to attempt only 50 questions. There is no point in attempting the entire paper. Because only top fifty question are checked, even if they are wrong .The last 10 questions, even if they are correct are not counted in the fifty questions. That is why, the candidate has to keep in mind that only best fifty questions, which he or she can answer, have to be attempted. 

Paper 2 is on the subject selected by the candidate. The total questions in this paper are 50. Each question is of 2 marks and total marks are 100. Paper 3 is also based on the subject selected by the candidate for the exam.  The total marks of this paper are 150, with 75 questions.  Paper 2 and paper 3 are of compulsory nature. A candidate has to attempt all the questions in these two papers.

The third paper of only those candidates is evaluated who have cleared the first two papers.

In the management syllabus, the paper 2 will have 100 marks with 50 questions. The paper 3 will have two parts, A and B.The A part will have 10 short essay type question with 16 marks for each question. In part B there will be one question from each elective. The total marks in the paper 3 of the management will be 200.

GATE and its exam pattern and advantage of coaching classes

GATE graduate aptitude test for engineering is the all India based exam conducted by Indian institute of science and all IITs to selected candidates for post graduate course in prime science and technology institutes. Some leading public sector companies and defense and space science research organization also take junior scientist from selected candidates of GATE exam.

GATE is online exam held at various center across the country in 23 subjects from science, technology and engineering branches.  From 2016, all documents, certificates and application form can be uploaded through online and there is no need to send hard copy of any document to the exam conducting body. The payment of exam fee will also be through net banking, credit card or debit card etc.

The exam fee will be 1500 Indian rupees for general candidates and 750 Indian rupees for candidates belonging to ST, SC or other backward categories and physical challenged candidates.

GATE exam is held on one paper of 3 hours duration. The paper has 65 question and total marks will be 100. Out of these 100 marks, 70 % weightage is given to the technical section, while general aptitude and engineering match will have 15 % each weightage.

The multichoice objective questions will have one mark or two mark for all sections. Each question will have four choices for selection of one correct answer. In the numerical section, the answer will be in form of fill in the blank type. It will also be of 1 or 2 mark question. The answering the numerical section of the paper, each candidate will be given a virtual keypad.  Here, the candidates will not get any answer choice unlike objective type question.

For any wrong answer of the 1 mark objective question, 1/3 marks will be deducted.  Similarly in the 2 mark objective question, 2/3 marks will be deducted for any wrong answer.

Eligibility Criteria for GATE and UGC NET exams

GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is an all India level exam conducted by the Indian institute of science and Indian institute of technology on behalf of higher education department of ministry of human resources. The successful candidates are selected for post graduate courses and PhD courses in science and technology. Several leading public sector companies also offer jobs based on the results in GATE. Besides these offers, the junior level scientists for DRDO, ISRO and BARC are also chosen from list of successful candidates.

For appearing in GATE exam, a candidate must have completed the bachelor’s degree in any
 Engineering branch, technology or architecture subjects .That means he or she should have complete the four years of course after 10+ 2 .Those appearing in the final year of these exams can also appear.


Master degree holder in any engineering branch, sciences, mathematics, statistics, or computer sciences can also appear .Students in final year of these programs can also take part in GATE.

GATE exam is conducted in GATE Computer Science coaching single paper of 3 hours .The paper has 65 questions with maximum 100 marks. The question will be in multiple choice type and numerical answer type. For numerical questions, a candidate has to enter number as answer in virtual keypad given with exam.

UGC NET exam is conducted to select the candidates for teaching profession and junior research fellowship. The aim of this exam is to ensure a minimum standard in teaching and junior research fellowship. The exam is held in 83 subjects across the country at various centers.

Candidates must have secured at least 55 % marks in master degree from recognized university or institution in any subject from humanities’, sciences and technology. The candidates belonging to schedule tribe, schedule caste and other backward classes are required to have only 50 % marks. Candidates with disabilities also should have at least 50 % marks.

Candidates appearing in master degree exam Study Material of UGC NET Computer Science  can also take part in the UGC NET but they have to show the passing certificate with required marks. In case, they fail to pass the master degree exam with minimum marks, then they will be considered ineligible for the award of junior research fellowship and teaching profession.

Candidate should not be more than 28 years of age at the time of exam. Relaxation of 5 years is given in the case of candidates belonging to SC, ST and other backwards groups.  Age relaxation is also given to candidates with research experience in any subject. The candidates with LLB degrees are given 3 years relaxation. But the total relaxation cannot go beyond 5 years in any circumstances. For applying for assistant professor eligibility test, there is not upper age limit. 


The candidates are not required to send any certificate or degree to the UGC/ CBSE. But they must have all the required documents to be presented at the time of checking by UGC/ CBSE.

Eligibility for UGC NET exam and need for coaching classes

National eligibility test are conducted by the university grants commission to select the candidates for lectureship and for award of junior research fellowship in teaching professional and research. The aim of the exam is to ensure a minimum standard for candidates entering these professions. The test is conducted in social sciences, environmental science, forensic sciences, Geo science, chemical sciences, and all engineering branches and also in computer science and applications.  

The exam is conducted twice a year in June and December. Notifications for exams comes in month of February or March and August or September.  The test in computer science and application is conducted in three papers in two sessions. Two papers are held in first session. In the first paper, which is of 100 marks, candidate has to attempt 50 questions out of 60 questions.

In the second paper of the first session, there are 50 objective type questions and all are compulsory. The third paper contains 75 questions and all are compulsory.  Each question is of   2 marks each. The duration of first two papers is only 75 minutes each, while the duration for third paper is two and half hours.  

Graduation or post graduation in science or technology with at least 55 % marks is the minimum education qualification for candidates appearing for science streams and technological side exams. For candidates belonging to schedule caste or schedule tribe and other backward classes the minimum 50 % marks are needed for taking exams. Visually handicapped candidates are also required to have at least 50 % marks. 

Candidates appearing for post graduation exams can sit in the NET exams but they have to show the minimum passing marks required for the UGC NET at the time of selection .If they are not able to get the required minimum marks in their post graduation, and then they are considered ineligible for the further selection process.

Candidates with only graduation degree in sciences, Study Material of UGC NET Computer Science engineering or other subjects are eligible for fellowship only when they have registered for PhD courses. They have to do this registration within two years.
