WHAT IS UGC (NET-JRF)

UGC (University Grants Commission) Conduct the National Eligibility Test (NET) For Determining the eligibility of Indian nationals for Lectureship only or Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Eligibility for Lectureship both in Indian universities and colleges.

UGC NET Schedule

UGC conducts NET twice a year, i.e., in the months of June and December. The notifications announcing the June and December examinations are published in the months of March and September respectively.

Age Limit :

Junior Research Fellowship: Not more than 28 years. A relaxation upto 5 years is provided to the candidates belonging to OBC (Non-creamy layer, as per the Central list of OBC /SC/ST/PWD categories and to women applicants). Relaxation will also be provided to the candidates having research experience, limited to the period spent on research in the relevant/related subject of post-graduation degree, subject to a maximum of 5 years, on production of a certificate from appropriate authority. Three years’ relaxation in age will be permissible to the candidates possessing L.L.M. Degree. Total age relaxation on the above ground(s) shall not exceed five years under any circumstances.

* There is no upper age limit for applying for eligibility for Assistant Professor.
Eligibility for UGC NET Exam:

Candidates who have secured at least 55% marks (without rounding off) in Master’s Degree OR equivalent examination from universities/institutions recognized by UGC in Humanities (including languages) and Social Science, Computer Science & Applications, Electronic Science etc. are eligible for this Test. The Other Backward Classes (OBC) belonging to non-creamy layer / Scheduled Caste (SC) / Scheduled Tribe (ST) / Persons with disability (PWD) category candidates who have secured at least 50% marks (without rounding off) in Master’s degree or equivalent examination are eligible for this Test.

Candidates who have appeared OR will be appearing at the qualifying Master’s degree (final year) examination and whose result is still awaited OR candidates whose qualifying examinations have been delayed may also apply for this Test. However, such candidates will be admitted provisionally and shall be considered eligible for award of JRF/Assistant Professor eligibility only after they have passed their Master’s degree examination or equivalent with at least 55% marks (50% marks in case of OBC (Non-creamy layer)/ SC/ ST/ PWD (Persons with disability) category candidates). Such candidates must complete their P.G. degree examination within two years from the date of NET result with required percentage of marks, failing which they shall be treated as disqualified.

The Ph.D. degree holders whose Master’s level examination had been completed by 19th September, 1991 (irrespective of date of declaration of result) shall be eligible for a relaxation of 5% in aggregate marks (i.e., from 55% to 50%) for appearing in NET.

Exemption for eligibility for Assistant Professor:

NET/SLET/SET shall remain the minimum eligibility condition for recruitment and appointment of Assistant Professors in Universities/Colleges/Institutions. Provided however, that candidates, who are or have been awarded a Ph. D. Degree in accordance with the University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2009, shall be exempted from the requirement of the minimum eligibility condition of NET/SLET/SET for recruitment and appointment of Assistant Professor or equivalent positions in Universities/ Colleges/ Institutions.

The candidates who have passed the UGC/CSIR JRF examination prior to 1989 are also exempted from appearing in NET.

For SET Candidates: The candidates who have cleared the State Eligibility Test (SET) accredited by UGC for eligibility for Assistant Professor held prior to 1st June 2002, are exempted from appearing in NET, being eligible to apply for Assistant Professor anywhere in India. For SET held from 1st June 2002 onwards, the qualified candidates are eligible to apply for the post of Assistant Professor only in the universities/ colleges situated in the state from where they have cleared their SET.

The test will consist of three papers. All the three papers will consist of only objective type questions and will be held on last SUNDAY of June & December every year in two separate sessions as under:

Amongst those candidates who have cleared step I, a merit list will be prepared subject-wise and category-wise using the aggregate marks of all the three papers secured by such candidates.

There will be no negative marking.

Top 15% candidates (for each subject and category), from the merit list mentioned under step II, will be declared NET qualified for eligibility for Assistant Professor only.

Eligibility, Exam pattern and minimum qualifying marks for UGC NET exam

Central board of secondary education conducts exam on behalf of the UGC for selecting candidates for assistant professor and junior research fellowship for various Indian universities and colleges. The exam is held in 83 subjects across different centers in India.   The selected candidates for junior research fellowship are allowed to purse the research in their chosen subject. The candidates selected only for assistant professor are not given junior research fellowship.  

To be eligible for the exam, a candidate has to secure at least 55 % marks in the post graduation subject. The subject can be from science, humanities or computer science or commerce streams. The candidates belonging to backward classes, schedule tribes and schedule castes have to secure only 50 % marks in master level exam from Indian university.

Candidates who are appearing for the master‘s exam can also sit for the UGC NET exam. However, they have to get the require marks for final selection in the UGC NET exam.  

For junior research fellowship the upper age limit is 28 years .The relaxation of five years is given to the candidates belonging to reserved categories. Research experience candidates in any subject or field are also given relaxation. This relaxation correspondence to the years spent in research. Three years of age relaxation is also given to the candidates with LLB degree. But the total age relaxation will not be more than five years in any case .There is no upper age limit for assistant professor ship.

Test is conducted Study Material of UGC NET Computer Science in three papers and all three papers are in objective type questions. The test is help in three separate sessions. The paper 1 contains 60 questions and a candidate has to attempt only 50 questions.  The aim of the paper is to test the aptitude of candidates for teaching and research fields.  Only the first 50 questions are evaluated. Each correct answer will carry 2 marks.

In paper 11, 50 questions are selected from the subject chosen by the candidate and all the questions are compulsory. The third paper also carry question from the chosen subject of the candidate and carry 75 question with 2 marks each.  These two papers 11 and 111 cover the entire syllabus of the subject including electives without any options. The correct answers are marked on the optical mark reader; this sheet is given to the candidates along with questions papers at the exam centers.


General candidates UGC NET coaching for Management in Delhi  have to secure at least 40 % marks in the paper 1 and paper 11 and 50 % marks in the paper 111 to qualify for selection as assistant professor or for junior research fellowship .Reserved category candidates have to secure at least 35 % makers in paper 1 and 11 and 40 % in paper 111.

UGC NET exam pattern and eligibility criteria

The Central board of secondary education on behalf of the university grand commission holds national eligibility test for selecting Indian students for teaching professional and for junior research fellowship.  The exam is conducted in 83 subjects across the India.


The students who are selected for junior research fellowship can do research in the post graduation subject or related subject. These candidates are eligible for the post of assistant professor.

For setting in the exam, the candidates must have secured at least 55 % marks in the post graduation from university or institute recognized by the UGC. The candidate belonging to backward classes and schedule castes need only 50 % marks in the master degree from recognized university or institute. Persons with physical disability also need only 50 % marks.

Candidates who are appearing in the post graduate exams can appear for the NET exam but they have to show the passing of master exam with required marks before finally getting selected by UGC. If they fail to get the required qualifying marks, they shall be considered disqualified. Candidate whose post graduate subject is not mentioned in the list of subjects can appear in the any related subject.


The age limit is 28 years as on July 2016 .Relaxation up to 5 years is provided to students belonging to backward classes or schedule classes. Age relaxation is also applicable to the candidates who has research experience in any filed or subject. The relaxation depends on the years spent in research.


The exam pattern consists Study Material of UGC NET Computer Science of three papers in each session. The paper 1 and paper II will have 100 marks each. The paper 1 will have 60 questions. Out of these 60 questions, the 50 question have to be attempted by the candidates. The paper II will have 50 questions and all questions are compulsory. The time for solving these papers is 75 minutes. The third papers will be of 75 question and total marks allocated to this paper are 150. The allotted time is 2.5 hours.


The question in paper 1 will be UGC NET coaching for Management in Delhi of general nature and will test only the aptitude of the candidate for teaching and research jobs. The general ability to reasoning, logic and divergent thinking in candidates is tested. The paper II will have question from the subject selected by the candidate. Each question will have two marks. Paper III will also have question based on the subject chosen by the candidate. The correct answers to the compulsory questions will get two marks to the candidate. The questions in paper II and III covered the entire syllabus of the subject chosen by the candidates. The candidate will be provided with optical mark reader for answering the questions. This sheet will be given with question booklet.

Exam Pattern of the UGC NET

UGC NET exam is conducted twice a year to select candidates for teaching profession and also chose candidates for junior research fellowship.   A candidate has to be post graduate in the subject for taking part in the UGC NET exam. General candidate has to secure at least 55 % marks. Candidates belonging to backward classes, ST and SC groups only need 50 % marks.

Exam is conducted in three papers. Paper 1 is common to all candidates. This paper consists of 60 questions out of which candidates have to attempt only 50 questions. The question are objective type and are covered from history, geography, current affairs, political science, English, teaching aptitude etc. The total marks of this question papers is 100.  The questions are very easy and candidate has to attempt only 50 questions. There is no point in attempting the entire paper. Because only top fifty question are checked, even if they are wrong .The last 10 questions, even if they are correct are not counted in the fifty questions. That is why, the candidate has to keep in mind that only best fifty questions, which he or she can answer, have to be attempted. 

Paper 2 is on the subject selected by the candidate. The total questions in this paper are 50. Each question is of 2 marks and total marks are 100. Paper 3 is also based on the subject selected by the candidate for the exam.  The total marks of this paper are 150, with 75 questions.  Paper 2 and paper 3 are of compulsory nature. A candidate has to attempt all the questions in these two papers.

The paper on computer science  Study Material of UGC NET Computer Science is generally considered very easy. The candidate who has clear understanding of the concepts of his or her graduation subject can answer the question very easily. Most of the questions in computer science are on basics of java, software, object oriented analyses and design, data structure, fundamentals, digital logic and microprocessors etc.

The third paper of only those candidates is evaluated who have cleared the first two papers.

In the management syllabus, the paper 2 will have 100 marks with 50 questions. The paper 3 will have two parts, A and B.The A part will have 10 short essay type question with 16 marks for each question. In part B there will be one question from each elective. The total marks in the paper 3 of the management will be 200.


The exam pattern can be bit confusing to candidates with no previous experience in attempting these types of question. The importance of coaching classes comes at this point. GATE and its exam pattern and advantage of coaching classes

GATE graduate aptitude test for engineering is the all India based exam conducted by Indian institute of science and all IITs to selected candidates for post graduate course in prime science and technology institutes. Some leading public sector companies and defense and space science research organization also take junior scientist from selected candidates of GATE exam.

GATE is online exam held at various center across the country in 23 subjects from science, technology and engineering branches.  From 2016, all documents, certificates and application form can be uploaded through online and there is no need to send hard copy of any document to the exam conducting body. The payment of exam fee will also be through net banking, credit card or debit card etc.

The exam fee will be 1500 Indian rupees for general candidates and 750 Indian rupees for candidates belonging to ST, SC or other backward categories and physical challenged candidates.

GATE exam is held on one paper of 3 hours duration. The paper has 65 question and total marks will be 100. Out of these 100 marks, 70 % weightage is given to the technical section, while general aptitude and engineering match will have 15 % each weightage.

The multichoice objective questions will have one mark or two mark for all sections. Each question will have four choices for selection of one correct answer. In the numerical section, the answer will be in form of fill in the blank type. It will also be of 1 or 2 mark question. The answering the numerical section of the paper, each candidate will be given a virtual keypad.  Here, the candidates will not get any answer choice unlike objective type question.

For any wrong answer of the 1 mark objective question, 1/3 marks will be deducted.  Similarly in the 2 mark objective question, 2/3 marks will be deducted for any wrong answer.

Eligibility Criteria for GATE and UGC NET exams

GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is an all India level exam conducted by the Indian institute of science and Indian institute of technology on behalf of higher education department of ministry of human resources. The successful candidates are selected for post graduate courses and PhD courses in science and technology. Several leading public sector companies also offer jobs based on the results in GATE. Besides these offers, the junior level scientists for DRDO, ISRO and BARC are also chosen from list of successful candidates.

For appearing in GATE exam, a candidate must have completed the bachelor’s degree in any
 Engineering branch, technology or architecture subjects .That means he or she should have complete the four years of course after 10+ 2 .Those appearing in the final year of these exams can also appear.


Master degree holder in any engineering branch, sciences, mathematics, statistics, or computer sciences can also appear .Students in final year of these programs can also take part in GATE.

GATE exam is conducted in GATE Computer Science coaching single paper of 3 hours .The paper has 65 questions with maximum 100 marks. The question will be in multiple choice type and numerical answer type. For numerical questions, a candidate has to enter number as answer in virtual keypad given with exam.

UGC NET exam is conducted to select the candidates for teaching profession and junior research fellowship. The aim of this exam is to ensure a minimum standard in teaching and junior research fellowship. The exam is held in 83 subjects across the country at various centers.

Candidates must have secured at least 55 % marks in master degree from recognized university or institution in any subject from humanities’, sciences and technology. The candidates belonging to schedule tribe, schedule caste and other backward classes are required to have only 50 % marks. Candidates with disabilities also should have at least 50 % marks.

Candidates appearing in master degree exam Study Material of UGC NET Computer Science  can also take part in the UGC NET but they have to show the passing certificate with required marks. In case, they fail to pass the master degree exam with minimum marks, then they will be considered ineligible for the award of junior research fellowship and teaching profession.

Candidate should not be more than 28 years of age at the time of exam. Relaxation of 5 years is given in the case of candidates belonging to SC, ST and other backwards groups.  Age relaxation is also given to candidates with research experience in any subject. The candidates with LLB degrees are given 3 years relaxation. But the total relaxation cannot go beyond 5 years in any circumstances. For applying for assistant professor eligibility test, there is not upper age limit. 


The candidates are not required to send any certificate or degree to the UGC/ CBSE. But they must have all the required documents to be presented at the time of checking by UGC/ CBSE.
